SHINee’s “The Story of Light" trilogy albums

SHINee releases "The story of light" album.

"The Story of light" is the sixth studio album by k-pop idol group SHINee produced under SM Entertainment.

This album represents the 10 year anniversary for SHINee and is the first release since former member Jonghyun's untimely death in December 2017. However the remaining members soldier on with their latest comeback. SHINee decided to divide the album into three EP’s, Therefore each EP will contain 6 tracks and a title track.

The story of light EP.1

First in “The story of light“ trilogy and the first single “Good evening” released on May 28th.

“Good evening" is a deep house track that’s reminiscent of SHINee’s chart topping track “View” however this track has more of a R&B sound blended with the deep house vibe. “Good Evening” incorporates 112’s 1997's classic hit “Cupid” into the melody of the song.

Furthermore this EP is full with R&B compositions with the occasional experimental electronica piece. It seems SHINee have used their emotions while grieving to improve their skills and to give to the album a more personal look into their lives. Key himself wrote "You & I" with lyrics showing the painful reality of his grief.

The story of light EP.2

Title track “I want you” along with the second EP was released on June 11th."I want you" has tropical an energetic feel to it yet it maintains some strong emotional lyrics. This EP has largely Tropical and R&B with just a touch of electronica, it's perfect for summer.

While there is a slightly different mood compared to the first EP this one is full of club bangers ready for the summer season. Except for "Who waits for love" a refreshing power ballad among all the club tracks.

Finally the third EP and single “Our Page” dropped on June 25th completes SHINee's sixth studio album. “Our page” Unlike the other singles from the trilogy is an emotional slow to medium tempo ballad with an electric piano melody. All four members participated in the lyrics for this song by reminiscing on memories shared with Jonghyun.

EP.3 is mostly power ballads however tracks "Retro" and "Lock you down" have a fast pace beat and more of a dance vibe, that is well-balanced by the emotional ballads.

All the members took part in the lyrical content of this album while having Jonghyun in mind. This is especially clear is the deep and sorrowful lyrics of “I want you”.

SHINee's "The story of light" EP.1,2 and 3 are a whirlwind of emotion influenced by the passing of Jonghyun, It mourns and celebrates the memories of kim Jonghyun.

Showing that they are determined to carry on dreaming and moving on, however "The story of light" does not represent a full recovery but it does shine a light on their perseverance through the traumatic experience. While this trilogy commemorates a decade in the industry and will make you want to dance as well as cry at times.
